Morton Award 2017

I have received the 2017 Morton Award for lens based work.

My new project ~ Tongues ~ is about speaking in tongues which deals with themes of automatism, memory, translation and the hypnotic.

The gift of ‘tongues’ - traditionally visually, depicted by flame - links to previous work Droste in which the naked flame is both the subject of the film and as the light source that made the print. As the act of speaking in tongues makes an internal experience physical, this new work will translate the sound into another opportunity for a physical immersive experience.

This project is part of a long-term body of work on oral traditions and the use of language and speech in my practice. It will be ready in autumn 2018.
